Several arrests for drug offences following City Police operation

Seven people have been arrested for drug-related offences following an intelligence-led operation by the City of London Police which featured the involvement of multiple units in the Square Mile.

The operation, coordinated by the City of London Police communities and partnerships team, took place on Thursday (20 July 2017) evening and targeted suspects concerned in the supply and possession of class A drugs in the Middlesex Street (E1) area.

Building on concerns raised by the local community, the activity involved the City Police roads policing unit, support group, dog unit, major investigation team, scientific support unit, and others.

The successful operation resulted in the arrest of seven suspects for various drug offences including - possession with intent to supply class A drugs; possession of class A drugs; and driving while under the influence of drugs; as well as the seizure of four vehicles believed to be used in the transport of class A drugs.

Sergeant Pete Lucas, from the City of London Police communities and partnerships team, said:

“This operation was a resounding success, and as a result of coordinating the expertise and resources of several different City of London Police units we were able to successfully make multiple arrests.

“This is a perfect example of using intelligent, creative, problem-solving methods to respond to concerns from the public, who were worried about criminal activity in their local area and rightly raised the issues with the police. We’d encourage anyone else to do the same.”

During the arrests, officers also uncovered a sock containing 33 wraps of class A drugs that had been concealed inside a hollowed out section of the driver’s door.

City of London Police Commander Jane Gyford added:

“This operation is a fantastic example of front line community police officers identifying an issue – in this case drug-related crime in the Middlesex Street area - collating the intelligence and working with colleagues to deliver a programme of activity to respond proactively to the concerns of local residents.”
