‘Off the Cuff’ explores the fascinating history of C.H. Rolph - City police officer turned writer, journalist and social commentator

Welcome to Off the Cuff, the City of London Police podcast.

Here at the City of London Police, we have a history of trying new things, so we’ve recorded a series of interviews with officers and staff from across the force to shed some light on what goes on behind the scenes at a busy, modern police force.

EPISODE FIVE – C.H. Rolph – who was he, why does he matter, and why is there a hall named after him at the City of London Police?

In our fifth and final episode of our debut season, we change course to take an in-depth look at the fascinating life and career of former City of London Police officer C.H. Rolph, known as Cecil Hewitt to family and friends, who reached the rank of Chief Inspector during his 25 years policing the Square Mile in the 1920s, 30s and 40s.

Featuring special audio from a 1970s BBC interview, we invite you to find out more about this intriguing piece of forgotten history from the City of London Police, with a closer examination of a man who led an extraordinary double-life as both a police officer and journalist, before going on to become a successful campaigner for social change.

WHAT’S TO COME?

In Off the Cuff, we want to share stories of the men and women ‘behind the badge’, and to give you real insight on what makes police officers – and a police force – tick.

As well as officer interviews, this initial series of episodes has featured historical pieces, and offbeat stories which might usually go uncovered. Each of these stories gives an intimate and honest glimpse at the real City of London Police – our values, our identity, and our people.

Over the course of the last three months, Off the Cuff has heard City of London Police commissioner Ian Dyson QPM give a detailed career retrospective; Sgt Pete Lucas has explained why policing is like a marriage; and the City’s Director of Forensic Services has shed some insight on some of her most notable achievements working in the field of forensics for more than 20 years.
